Kalala Winery

Kalala Winery, West Kelowna

“They believed this coexistence to be so inspiring that they moved their village to this very spot, in hopes that the same harmony would be reflected in their village, and named it Kalala, meaning Miracle Place.”

Kalala Winery was previously located more inland along the infamous West Kelowna Wine Trail. The clients however, wanted to move their public facility closer to the water to be near the other wineries, as well as provide better scenery. The ventilation is purely natural thanks to the 'stack effect', where hot air gets replaced by cool air as it rises out of the solar chimney. This passive ventilation allows for a significantly smaller carbon footprint, something the clients and our studio were aiming to achieve with this project. While sustainability is the foundation and backbone of this design, Kalala winery takes on a natural and industrial look while giving a breathtaking view of the Okanagan Lake.
